Gardnerella vaginalis is the most common bacterium associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV). While BV is not classified as a sexually transmitted infection, it can be triggered by sexual activity and causes symptoms including unusual vaginal discharge and a characteristic fishy odour. Testing identifies the bacterium so appropriate antibiotic treatment can be prescribed.
When do you need a test?
If you have unusual vaginal discharge, a strong or fishy odour, or if a previous BV treatment has not resolved symptoms. Also recommended if a sexual partner has been diagnosed with BV-related symptoms.
Why is it important?
Untreated BV can increase susceptibility to other STIs including HIV, chlamydia, and gonorrhoea. During pregnancy, BV is associated with premature birth and low birth weight. Accurate diagnosis ensures targeted treatment rather than empirical antibiotics.
